NOTE: Misoprostol is included as one option for NSAID prophylaxis. However, NSAIDs should be avoided in patients with dyspepsia wherever possible. Refer also to NSAID section in chapter 10.

NOTE: Gastroprotection
1. The appropriateness of repeat prescribing of NSAIDs should be reviewed regularly.
2. If traditional NSAIDs are required rather than simple analgesics, use the less GI toxic agents (eg ibuprofen) but also consider cardiovascular risk of patient and chosen NSAID
3. For patients who are at high risk of developing serious GI complications (eg previously established acid peptic disease, frail elderly, concomitant oral steroids or anticoagulants), the options are: coprescription of omeprazole, lansoprazole or misoprostol with a traditional NSAID, or the prescription of a COX 2 inhibitor.
