Notes for: Drugs For Oral Ulceration & InflammationLast edited [13/07/2012 11:17:05]
1. Caution: Miconazole and other anti-fungals enhance the anti-coagulant effect of warfarin
2. Oral thrush is often over-diagnosed in the immuno-competent. Prescribing is only recommended where symptomatic thrush has been identified. Oral thrush tends to be more problematic in cancer patients, other immuno-compromised patients, and those on corticosteroids.
3. Failure to respond to treatment (particularly in the immuno-compromised) may indicate mouth ulceration due to herpes. The appropriate swab is required.

1. Benzydamine is useful in palliating discomfort in a variety of ulcerative conditions. It may cause stinging, often reduced by dilution with an equal volume of water.
2. Orabase® is cheap and effective in providing mechanical protection of oral and perioral lesions.
3. Hydrocortisone oromucosal tablets are useful for some forms of mouth ulcers and may be fairly easily placed near or on the ulcer site.
4. Care should be taken using choline salicylate gel as it may itself cause ulceration (salicylate content). It is available over the counter.
5. Bonjela® in not recommended for use in those aged under 16 years.
